Social media is dominating the Internet and Twitter is leading the pack along with Facebook. You can gain many prospects from Twitter, but you also have to know enough not to make the kind of mistakes made by many new marketers.

When you start marketing on Twitter, you have to keep in mind your target market and who you’re dealing with. Sending your followers too many messages that are off topic will cause them to ignore you or stop following you. Don’t make the typical mistake of forgetting about your niche and sending out tweets that are not relevant. This often happens because marketers want to build relationships with their followers, which is valid. At the same time, though, it’s important to stay on topic most of the time. If your tweets are all over the map and have no consistency, it’s hard to build up your credibility in your niche. It’s fine if you occasionally tweet on other, random topics to entertain your followers. The majority of your tweets, however, should have something to do with your own market. That means if your main topic is golf, then you should be mostly focused on giving your followers information on this subject. If you start to tweet about every other random thing you like, you’ll lose focus and also your followers.

You have to realize that Twitter is a social network and people don’t want to be bored, they want to read tweets that are interesting and entertaining. You can take advantage of this as a Twitter marketing. Make sure your tweets are varied and lighthearted so people will enjoy reading them. Don’t just stick to one single topic and be all serious. This is a sure shot recipe to bring down your subscriber count. If you bore people, they will have no reason to keep following you. Put some personality into your tweets, and also dig up useful information that people will find helpful. Over time you’ll realize that this is actually helping you out with your sales and growing your business in an indirect way. The best way to approach Twitter is to combine business and a playful spirit.

Coming across like a corporate executive is another typical mistake made by Twitter marketers. They erroneously believe that their audience will respect them and look up to them this way. Twitter members, however, don’t want to talk to corporate types, but to down to earth people they can relate to. It also gives you more flexibility when you aren’t simply representing one product or company. Your followers don’t use Twitter to interact with a company, so you would only lose people this way.

If you want to make it with Twitter, just avoid these blunders and stay away from any you see in the future.
