Can using compatible cartridges void my warranty?

It is a very common conception that using compatible/remanufactured ink cartridges will void your printers warranty  .

Using compatible or remanufactured inkjet cartridges does not void your warranty at all. It is actually the law that printer manufacturers  honour  their warranty regardless of the ink you choose to use in your printer.

Many people believe that using compatible or remanufactured ink or toner cartridges will void your printers warranty. This is not true, but the printer manufacturers do not like you knowing it.

The following federal law applies to these cartridges:

MAGNUSON-MOSS WARRANTY IMPROVEMENT ACT
United States Code Annotated
Title 15 Commerce and Trade
Chapter 50 Consumer Product Warranties
15 Section 2302
“(c) No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be waived by the commission if:
1) The warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and
2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest.”
Under no circumstances may any company or associate, salesperson or service technician deny you service or warranty work that would otherwise be covered under the warranty program.

We even found this on the HP website, it was buried but it is there:

Q17. Will my warranty be affected if I install a non-HP upgrade/option in my HP product ?

HP warranty extends only to HP products and options. If you install a non-HP option into your HP product and this option then fails, you must contact the supplier for warranty cover on that item.

The warranty on your HP product will not be affected by the installation of a non-HP upgrade/option unless your HP product is damaged as a result of installation and/or operation of a third party option, such damage will not be covered by HP warranty.

If your HP product is not operating correctly, you may be asked to verify that any non-HP option is not responsible for the problem be uninstalling any such items.

So there you go, please do not believe the hype. The printer manufacturers sell the printers cheap and then proceed to make their money by selling you their own very expensive ink cartridges. When it comes to quality, the original manufacturers cartridges are best, but for most applications are completely unessesary
 .

Wether you have a Hp printer and want to use remanufactured hp ink cartridges, or an Epson printer and want to use compatible epson ink cartridges, you can do so with the knowledge that it will not void your printers warranty, but will save you a small fortune on toner and ink cartridges.
